Perhaps the reason that cheese balls aren’t as fashionable these days is that they are not normally made in the shape of animals. Except Halloween cheese balls. In the shape of spiders.
I wanted to attempt an all edible spider cheese ball, (NO pipe cleaner legs here!) but was at a loss as to what would be savory and black and edible. Then, I was cleaning out my spice cupboard and came across a huge jar of black sesame seeds that had been hiding at the back of the top shelf for ages. BINGO! Black sesame seeds are perfect, and look very spider-ish, I must say. And – bell pepper strips are perfectly shaped spider legs, turns out.
You can use your favorite cheese ball recipe and then just roll it in the seeds on a plate. Or, use our recipe below. Either way, I promise it will be the hit of the party.
Happy Hauntings, Everyone!

HALLOWEEN SPIDER CHEESE BALL RECIPE
8 ounces regular or light cream cheese, softened
8 ounces cheddar cheese (or other favorite cheese), grated
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper sauce
2 green onions, thinly sliced, tops included
1 cup black sesame seeds ( or more as needed to cover cheese ball)
1 jumbo sized pimento stuffed green olive
1 large green bell pepper, halved and seeds and pulp removed
Mix together the cream cheese, cheddar, cayenne pepper sauce and green onions. Form into a ball shape. Freeze for at least one hour.
Place sesame seeds on a plate and roll cheese ball in seeds, pressing down to make sure seeds adhere to cheese ball. Place on a serving plate.
Cut olive in half across diameter. Make adents with the tips of your finger for where the eyes should go. Stick the eyes into dents in cheese ball with toothpicks. Cut bell pepper into eight long slices, making sure the curved shape of the bell pepper is at top of each piece. Place pieces on cheese ball with toothpicks, to form spider legs.
Serve chilled with crackers, toasted baguette slices or pita crisps.
