Spooky Spider Cheeseball Recipe for Halloween Hauntings

Food should be fun, I say.  And sometimes weird, freaky or scary. Like on Halloween, for example.

In  Halloweens past we have whipped up a jack-o-lantern cheeseball by crushing nacho cheese Doritos and rolling the cheeseball in the crumbs.

Jack-o-Lantern Cheese Ball 1865x1865

This year, I wanted to attempt an all edible spider cheeseball, but was at a loss as to what would be savory and black and edible. Then, I was cleaning out my spice cupboard a few weeks ago and came across a huge jar of black sesame seeds that have been lurking at the back of the top shelf for ages now. BINGO! Black sesame seeds are perfect, and look very spider-ish, I must say.

You can use your favorite cheeseball recipe and then just roll it in the seeds on a plate. Or, use our recipe below. Either way, I promise it will be the hit of the party.

Healthy Halloween Treats - Carrot Rice Mini Jack-o Lanterns

Here’s something to help tone down the sugar coma that results from having that candy binge on October 31. Try our healthy Halloween treats! And yes, I did say “healthy” and “Halloween” in the same sentence.

These little gems are yummy and healthy and so easy to make. And – my fab frugal friends – they are a FABFRUGALFOOD EXCLUSIVE! No, seriously – you won’t find these out there anywhere! I thought this up whilst  in the shower one morning. Hey! – isn’t that where you receive your best culinary inspirations?

Here’s the scoop: Just cook some medium or short-grain rice as per the package directions, but replace some of the water with carrot juice. Let cool to room temp. Form into little balls the size of ping-pong balls. Cut black olives into little shapes to form eyes and mouth and then a little piece of green bell pepper or green onion to form a stem.

Then, just sit back and revel in your healthy but festive smugness.

Happy Hauntings, Everyone!

Eat, Drink and be Scary! For a Festive Halloween Beverage Whip Up Our Easy Black Licorice Spider Punch

Easy Halloween Punch - Complete with Black Licorice Spider Garnish

I love Halloween. And, I especially love easy but fun Halloween food and drink ideas – like this one!

Five minutes until the party starts? No beverage to liven up the party? No problem!

If you have two things on hand you can make a festive drink that will impress any gouls or goblins! All you need is orange juice and grenadine syrup, a pomegranate syrup used mostly by bartenders – but you can find it at any mega mart these days. This drink is basically is a virgin tequila sunrise. To get the “layered” look in the glass, place in glass in the following order: a little grenadine syrup; ice cubes to fill the glass; orange juice; more grenadine syrup. That’s it!

This presentation idea came from this month’s issue of Everyday Food by the Martha Stewart folks – but I changed the beverage to something completely different. Black licorice ropes and black sanding sugar make this presentation spectacular, but are entirely optional. For the spider, just cut some spider “legs” and bundle them together and tie with a long licorice strand. For the black top of the glass, place a piece of tape around top of glass about 1/2 inch from the top. Then, rub corn syrup over the top 1/2 inch and then roll in black sanding sugar. Remove tape. Couldn’t be easier!

Other Halloween beverages worth sipping:
Cherry Fizz Punch, Lunch Box Bunch
Witch’s Brew,  eCurry
Halloween Happy Hour, Macheesemo
Bootiful Beverages, Talk of Tomatoes
Blood Red Punch, Noble Pig

Festive Jack-o-Lantern Cheese Ball

Festive Jack-o-Lantern Cheese Ball Halloween Recipe

I promise this jack-o-lantern cheese ball recipe will make you the hit of any Halloween celebration!

I was looking for something savory and orange to roll the cheese ball in and finally the light bulb went on: crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos! They are the perfect color for a jack-o-lantern and add a little zip, too. I know they’re not the healthiest thing you can put in your mouth, but really the color is perfect and you’re only using a little bit of crumbs.
